You and your family will be amazed with the talent and devotion as young soloists perform with the Utah Symphony. Past soloists have gone on to perform in the Utah Symphony or have international touring careers.

  • Artist Profile:

    Seong-Eun Cho, 17, began piano lessons at age five in Korea. He moved to Los Angeles, CA at age 10 and then to Provo, Utah at age 11 where he currently lives. He is currently studying with Dr. Peery-Fox who has been his piano teacher for approximately one year. He has earned superior ratings in the Encore Competition and the Utah State Solo/Ensemble Festival. He has played the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Utah Valley Symphony in the Young Artists concert. He is fluent in both Korean and English and earned high scores in numerous math competitions including ones at the state level.  Seong-Eun also plays violin in the Timpview Philharmonic Orchestra and runs on the cross country team.

    Michelle Dean is 18 years old and is in her first year at the University of Utah studying Vocal Performance. She studies privately with Dr. Robert Breault and has previously studied with Jennifer Erickson. Michelle received first place the past two years in the classical division of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Competition and also placed both years in the musical theatre division. She was very involved in musical theatre in high school. Some of her favorite roles were Christine in Phantom of the Opera (2010) and a Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2011).  Michelle’s dream is to be a professional opera singer at the Met. She is so grateful to have a fantastic support group of friends, family, and teachers.

    Kate Hales,16, has studied viola with Roberta Zalkind, assistant principal violist of the Utah Symphony, for seven years.  In 2011, Kate was a soloist in the Utah Symphony Youth Guild Recital. She was also awarded 2nd place in the Utah Chamber Music Competition. She has played in the Gifted Music School Orchestra, directed by Eugene Watanabe as well as with the Young Artist Chamber Players, directed by Jack Ashton.  She attended Music @ Menlo in 2008, the Summer Chamber Music Workshop at the University of Utah in 2009, Boston University Tanglewood Institute in 2011 and Montecito International Music Festival in 2012. She attends Skyline High School in Salt Lake City. In her spare time, Kate enjoys reading, singing, and acting. 

    David Horton (17) is a senior in West High's IB program.  He studies piano with Dr. Vera Watanabe, attends the Gifted Music School on a full-tuition scholarship, and lives in Salt Lake. He has performed with the Riverton Metropolitan Orchestra, Oquirrh Mountain Symphony, Interlochen Philharmonic, University of Utah Wind Ensemble, Rocky Ridge Faculty Orchestra in Colorado, and has been featured on Kansas Public Radio and KBYU.  David performed in masterclasses with Leon Fleisher, Stephen Hough, and John Perry. Among his awards are a performance in the Utah Symphony Youth Guild Recital, and top prizes in the Liszt International Piano Competition, Riverton Metropolitan Orchestra Concerto Competition, and Interlochen Concerto Competition. A passionate composer, David recently took second place at the UMTA Composition Competition. David’s previous teachers were Dr. Conner and Ms. Janatova.

    Margaret Ivory, 14, is a 4.0 student at Olympus Junior High School and a full scholarship student at the Gifted Music School.  She currently studies violin with Eugene Watanabe. She was awarded the 3rd prize at the Utah Stradivarius Competition, soloed with the Oquirrh Mountain Symphony Orchestra, featured on a radio program on KBYU, toured Europe with the Rocky Mountain Strings, and was principal violinist of the Suzuki Youth Orchestra of the Americas.   Margaret recently performed in masterclasses for Robert Lipsett, Andres Cardenes and James Ehnes. Margaret’s past violin teachers were Deborah Moench and Ramona Stirling.  A resident of Holladay, Maggie is the daughter of Frank and Rachael Ivory and enjoys travelling and tennis.

    Rebecca Pedersen is a 20 year old soprano from Bountiful, Utah, where she lives with her parents and 10 siblings. Rebecca is a sophomore at Brigham Young University, where she is privileged to study with Darrell and Jennifer Welsh-Babidge. She is also fortunate in her mentor; world renowned mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, through the Institute for Young Dramatic Voices. In 2010 Rebecca was selected to perform in the Salute to Youth concert, where she sang Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro. As a freshman, Rebecca won both the BYU Singer of the Year Competition, and the Concerto Competition where she performed with the BYU Symphonic Orchestra. Rebecca also maintains a close working relationship with the Utah Lyric Opera Company, where she was cast in their recent production of La Traviata.

    Kana Yoshigi, 13, is a full scholarship student at the Gifted Music School and studies piano with Dr. Vera Oussetskaia-Watanabe.  She played a movement of a Mozart Concerto with the Gifted Music School Orchestra conducted by Leon Fleisher at the annual Spring Gala in 2012.  In 2011, Kana performed with the Utah Symphony on their Salute to Youth Concert conducted by Maestro Vladimir Kulenovic. Kana was also a winner at the Youth Guild Recital.  An outstanding student at Churchill Jr. High School and athlete, she was a 2009 state champion in short and long course swimming in her age division. Her previous teacher was Mari Evans. Born in Japan and currently residing in Salt Lake City, she is the daughter of Dr. Masaaki and Megumi Yoshigi.
