Stravinsky - Greeting Prelude
Rachmaninoff - Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor for Piano and Orchestra
Rachmaninoff - Symphony No. 2 in E minor
The Utah Symphony Masterworks season begins with two Romantic-era favorites by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Rachmaninoff wrote his 1st Piano Concerto in his teens but revised it twenty six years later, well after the success of his mighty 2nd Symphony. Taken together, this pair of masterpieces shows that in both his exuberant youth and his confident maturity, Rachmaninoff was always the quintessential Russian Romantic. Stravinsky's playful, Happy Birthday-inspired Greeting Prelude opens the program.
