The Utah Symphony Masterworks season begins with two Romantic-era favorites by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Rachmaninoff wrote his 1st Piano Concerto in his teens but revised it twenty six years later, well after the success of his mighty 2nd Symphony. Taken together, this pair of masterpieces shows that in both his exuberant youth and his confident maturity, Rachmaninoff was always the quintessential Russian Romantic. Stravinsky's playful, Happy Birthday-inspired Greeting Prelude opens the program.

  • Artist Profile:

    Yevgeny Sudbin has performed in many of the world’s finest venues, both in recital and with orchestra. In 2012-13, his U.S. engagements include tonight’s debut with Utah Symphony, his Atlanta Symphony debut ; recitals in New York’s Town Hall, under the auspices of the venerable People’s Symphony Concerts; with Portland (OR) Piano International series; and in Santa Cruz, CA. He also returns to Minnesota Orchestra to perform and record Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2  in his ongoing collaboration  for BIS recording  all  the Beethoven Piano Concerti under Osmo Vanska. He makes his first appearances in Australia performing the same work with Adelaide Symphony, and  in New Zealand under conductor Mark Wigglesworth. European engagements include recitals in Milan, Berlin, and London’s Wigmore Hall, and concerti with the European Union Orchestra, London Philharmonia, Budapest Philharmonic and Belgium Philharmonie.  Next month, he will perform Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto #1 with the Nagoya Philharmonic, Thierry Fischer conducting.

    Sudbin has appeared with many of the world’s most distinguished orchestras such as London Philharmonic and Philharmonia ; BBC and BBC Scottish and the symphony orchestras of Seattle, San Francisco, North Carolina, New Jersey, Indianapolis and Vancouver ,  among others.  

    He has an exclusive 7 year 14 CD contract with BIS records  which has released many   award-winning CD's  including Scarlatti,Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Haydn, Chopin and orchestral repertoire with North Carolina, Sao Paulo and Singapore symphonies.

    Born in St Petersburg in 1980, Yevgeny Sudbin displayed exceptional musical talent from an early age and in 1987 entered the Specialist Music School of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1990 he continued his studies in Berlin and in 1997 he moved to London to study with Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy of Music.  The Pulvermacher Foundation, Alexis Gregory Foundation, and Wall Trust have also played important roles in Sudbin’s career. He makes his home in London with his wife and daughter.
