Mercedes Smith, Flute – Musician Highlight

This week I’m excited to introduce our new Principal Flute, Mercedes Smith!

Mercedes Smith, Prinicipal Flute - Utah Symphony

What concerto did you audition with?
Mozart G Major, but in the final round we were also asked to play Syrinx for flute alone by Debussy, which is one of my all-time favorites.

What is your favorite restaurant in SLC?
Rose Establishment

How many years have you been playing your instrument?
19 years.  (now I feel old!)

What other instruments do you play?
Piccolo, alto flute, and piano but only very slowly 😉

What orchestral piece do you find most enjoyable to play?
I love the music written around 1910-1920, particularly works by Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky.

What advice would you give to young musicians?
It’s not about how many hours you practice, it’s about how intelligently you practice.

What is one unusual item on your bucket list?
Wear a giant hat at the Kentucky Derby.  Anyone have an extra ticket?
