The Path to Choosing a Music Director

September 7th, 2010 by Sara M. K. Neal

Over the next three weeks we’ll be having a series of blog posts from different authors all about our new Music Director, Thierry Fischer. We hope you enjoy learning a little bit more about the process of finding a Music Director, who he is, and why we’re so excited he’s our new maestro!

As a member of the Utah Symphony Conductor Search Committee for the previous two years, I had the opportunity to glimpse the world of conductors and their interactions with the Utah Symphony.

It is ironic that one of the most important musicians on stage is one who does not make a sound. But the truth is, a conductor can wreck a performance or help create magic. Or worst of all, bore everyone! This is quite a trick considering the music being performed is often some of the greatest ever created.

The search committee researched hundreds of conductors to determine the likelihood of a perfect match with the orchestra. Everyone involved wanted a marriage made in heaven, but as in traditional matrimony, the opposite often occurs. Preferences for the new musical leader can range from young or old, foreign or citizen, man or woman, fiery temperament or calm and steady. Non musical aspects also come into play. Is he/she good with the business aspects of the organization? Will he be an asset in the community? And generally, will he be a quality person of intelligence and humanity?

In recommending Thierry Fischer, the committee felt these questions were answered in the affirmative. The orchestra gave his conducting the highest marks. Committee members spent substantial time with him in Salt Lake and in Switzerland, and interviewed him in depth. Thierry Fischer was genuine and exuded an uncommon enthusiasm. I believe the chances are good that his talent and optimism will energize the orchestra and the state of Utah.
