Education is one of our top priorities at Utah Symphony | Utah Opera. Utah Symphony’s first school concerts of the year were Sept. 14 and 15 at Hillcrest High School. 4th grade students from both the Canyons and Jordan School Districts attended.  This year’s program is called, “March to the Symphony.”

In addition to hearing a wedding march, a coronation march, a graduation march, and a funeral march, the students have the chance to stand up and march to John Philip Sousa, and clap along with Strauss Sr.’s Radtzky March – just like they do at the New Year’s concert with the Vienna Philharmonic each year.

One of the teachers at Sprucewood Elementary wrote about her class’s experience here. Want to know more about our excellent educational programs? Click here.

Just curious… What songs/marches did they perform?

David Cho has selected a set of engaging marches. The premise is that listeners are usually surprised to hear the variety of sounds composers have titled as marches. When we think of a march, we usually think of music played in parades. This concert demonstrates the many occasions – celebratory and solemn – we use marches. It reminds us of the shared experiences and emotion which music can bring to our lives on these occasions. David’s excellent narration and use of orchestral excerpts opens the music up a little further for the students. And twice during the concert the students are enthusiastic participants: they march during the Thunderer March, and clap along to the Radetzky March.
