3-week online course about Messiaen’s “Oiseaux exotiques”

September 8th, 2009 by Paula Fowler

Utah Symphony Librarian Clovis Lark, a music scholar and good friend of Pierre Boulez, who was a student of Olivier Messiaen, has prepared a 3-part on-line course to help Utah Symphony patrons learn about the fascinating composition Oiseaux exotiques (exotic birds) before they attend the concert on October 9 – 10. It’s a challenging piece, but Clovis will help us see “behind the composition” into Messiaen’s passion for the songs of various birds and the way he transposed them into music to be played by a piano soloist with a small orchestra. Clovis has pulled together photographs, details, and YouTube videos to guide patrons to greater appreciation of the composer and to a deeper understanding of the musical work. The lessons will be delivered by e-mail once a week on Thursdays starting on Sept 24th.
