Monday Links: Thierry Fischer, POPS Funding, and Jerry Steichen

There have been quite a few articles about Utah Symphony | Utah Opera in the last week.

Both the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune did preview articles about our upcoming Schubert’s “Unfinished” program. Ed Reichel wrote about Thierry Fischer’s path from playing flute in the Chamber Orchestra of Europe to being its conductor. Celia Baker mentions how much Thierry enjoyed Salt Lake and the Utah Symphony when he was here last season. The Standard-Examiner also previewed the concert.

Today Utah’s legislative session begins, and budget cuts are on the table. Ben Fulton of the Tribune has an interesting article about POPS funding and its history in Utah, dating back to Maurice Abravanel’s efforts to make the arts accessible in schools in the 1970’s.

Speaking of POPS funding, there have been a few articles about the Utah Opera program that goes out to hundreds of schools each year. The Salt Lake Tribune and Standard-Examiner both wrote (SE has video!) about one of the programs funded by POPS funding.

Finally, some hiring by Utah Symphony | Utah Opera made the news this week – Jerry Steichen will be joining us next season as our Principal Pops Conductor, and we’re excited that Leslie Peterson, daughter of Utah Opera founder Glade Peterson, is back with the organization and has accepted the position of Vice President of Development.
