JFK on the Human Spirit

I came across this quote in Michael Kaiser’s article “No Bailout for the Arts?” from this week’s Washington Post and thought it was a great summation of a reason the arts are so important in society:

I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over our cities, we, too, will be remembered not for our victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit. – John F. Kennedy
