Meet the Musicians : Harp

Louise Vickerman
Principal Harp
 
Louise Vickerman, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, was appointed Principal Harpist of the Utah Symphony/Utah Opera in January 1999. She was formerly Principal with the San Antonio Symphony and prior to that, with the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida. Ms. Vickerman has also performed with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony. Most recently she has performed as principal harpist for the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in CA, the Grand Teton Music Festival and has participated in numerous other festivals both here and abroad including the Park City International Music Festival, Colorado Music Festival, the BBC London Proms, the Aldeburgh Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival. She is also an experienced & respected teacher, and holds the permanent posts of Adjunct Professor of Harp at Weber State University in Ogden & Westminster College in Salt Lake City. Ms. Vickerman was appointed the interim director of Harp Studies at Brigham Young University for the 2005-06 academic year, she was invited to be on the Premier Artist Faculty for the 2009 Salvi Harps Summer Institute in Anaheim, CA, has presented master classes at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY and was guest clinician for their summer program “The Practical Harpist”. She also maintains a private teaching studio and has coached the harp sections of the Utah Youth Symphony and the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.

As a soloist she has appeared with the Utah Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony, The National Repertory Orchestra, The Orchestra of St. John’s Smith Square(UK), on Norwegian National and BBC Radio and at the Heidelberg Castle Festival, Germany. She appeared in recital with violinist Cho-Liang Lin at the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder and in 1998 she gave the world premiere of “Awuya”, a work for solo harp by the renown British composer Sally Beamish. Additional solo appearances include featured artist on the Nova Chamber Music Series, Salt Lake City and at the Assembly Hall for the Temple Square Concert Series, Salt Lake City .

Ms. Vickerman earned her Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music as a student of Kathleen Bride. She received her BA and Certificate of Postgraduate Studies from Glasgow University and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, studying with Sanchia Pielou and Karen Vaughan. Ms. Vickerman has received awards from the Scottish International Education Trust and the James Milne Memorial Trust (STUC).

Louise is married to CA native and Utah Symphony Associate Principal Trumpet, Peter Margulies. In 2008 she earned her Private Pilot Certificate and in 2009 sucessfully completed the glider rating. She also enjoys gardening, trap shooting and skiing. They live in the East Liberty Park neighborhood of Salt Lake City.
